The University of Mary Washington Philharmonic will host a performance titled “South of the Border” on Friday, April 22.
Featuring music from South America, the concert will be the orchestra’s last performance of the 2015-16 season. Highlights of the performance include Aaron Coplands’ El Salon Mexico, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita and AstorPiazzolla’s Libertango. The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Dodd Auditorium in George Washington Hall on the university’s Fredericksburg campus.
As part of a cultural exchange, UMW Director of Music Kevin Bartram will share the podium with renowned Argentine conductor Lucia Zicos. Zicos will conduct the Romance de Santa Fe for piano and orchestra with guest pianist and UMW adjunct faculty pianist Andrew Kraus. Bartram conducted in Argentina in February as part of the exchange.
The Philharmonic will also highlight student musicians, with Chavez’ Toccata for Percussion, and the UMW Guitar Ensemble directed by Bruce Middle. Also on the program is a work by student composer Austin O’Rourke, which won the 2015 ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award.
