University of Mary Washington Associate Professor of English, Linguistics, and Communication Maya Mathur will be featured on the radio program With Good Reason from April 9-15.
The program is titled “Where Game of Thrones Begins.”
According to the radio program notes, “As the premiere of Game of Thrones approaches, we trace the medieval roots of the hit TV show with Larissa Tracy (Longwood University). She discusses the influence of Tolkien and medieval literature on the popular program. And: Can a play written more than 400 years ago have something to say about Muslim-Americans? Some Shakespeare experts think so. In advance of Old Dominion University’s Shakespeare 400 Years After event, Imtiaz Habib (Old Dominion University) and Maya Mathur (University of Mary Washington) explore what Shakespeare’s plays can reveal about life today.”
Maya Mathur received her Ph.D. from the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. She presented a paper titled “Riotous Genres” at the annual conference of the Shakespeare Association of America, which was held in New Orleans from March 24-26, 2016. Her paper was part of a seminar on “Shakespeare and Riot.”
In 2015, she published an article titled “Rebellion from Below: Commonwealth and Community in The Life and Death of Jack Straw” in the Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. The early political play focuses on a rebel leader of the British Peasants’ Revolt of 1381.
