Where can you learn about homelessness in Virginia, discover the most popular shows on TV and see a sustainable fashion show all in one place?
Research and Creativity Day is a culmination of a year’s worth of work by University of Mary Washington students. The 11th annual event, set for Friday, April 28, is a celebration of student achievement.
“At UMW, we pride ourselves on providing opportunities for students to pursue their interests outside of the traditional classroom setting,” said Grant Woodwell, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of geology.
Established as a platform for sharing projects with fellow students, as well as faculty, administrators and guests, the day includes short oral presentations, art exhibits, music performances and more.
Sixty-plus poster displays, the fashion show and music will take place in the Hurley Convergence Center’s Digital Auditorium. Also in the HCC, 50 oral sessions are scheduled in third-floor classrooms from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Presentations that cover a wide variety of topics spanning most of UMW’s disciplines will be presented, with opportunities for questions and discussion. Departmental symposia will be held in Combs, Trinkle, Monroe and Woodard halls, and in the Ridderhof Martin Gallery.
A 10 a.m. fashion show featuring sustainable designs made by students and a 1:15 p.m. music concert showcasing original compositions are among the day’s highlights. Student work from across media will be displayed in the Melchers Hall art studios and duPont Gallery.
“The work presented at Research and Creativity Day events spans the full range of disciplines represented in the three colleges of the university,” Woodwell said. “It also demonstrates the commitment of our faculty to provide individual guidance and mentorship to our students.”
