Commander Youssef Aboul-Enein of the U.S. Naval Institute will speak at UMW’s Dahlgren campus on Thursday, Oct. 5, at 8:30 a.m.
The talk, titled “Counter-Terrorism in a Post-Arab Spring Ecosystem,” marks the first in a series of national security lectures planned at Dahlgren this fall. The presentations are meant to provoke conversation about international security and what students can do to make a difference in developing political landscapes.
Aboul-Enein, senior advisor and subject matter expert at the Defense Combating Terrorism Center in Washington, D.C., will discuss critical topics such as the rise of ISIS, rebellions in Yemen and resistance in Egypt regarding Islamist politics, and explore new ways of approaching these issues.
The author of several books on the Middle East, he has taught graduate-level classes on Islam at the National Defense University and the National Intelligence University; been deployed to Bosnia, West Africa and the Persian Gulf; and been honored by such entities as the Department of Homeland Security and the New York Police Department.
UMW presents the national security lecture series in conjunction with the Fredericksburg Regional Military Affairs Council and the Joint Warfare Analysis Center. Next up is a to-be-determined lecture in November, as well as one on Dec. 7, titled “CBRN Survivability in the 21st Century.”
The lectures will be held in University Hall, Room 110, and registration is requested due to limited space. Go online for more information and to register.
