Hamish Brewer, the Northern Virginia school principal who is nationally recognized for his unorthodox – yet highly effective – leadership approach, will talk with aspiring teachers at the University of Mary Washington on Monday, Nov. 27. The session, scheduled for 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Chandler Ballroom of the University Center, is open to the public at no charge.
The tattooed, skateboarding leader is well-known as an educational disrupter who transcends the status quo and typical educational norms. Brewer made a name for himself at Occoquan Elementary School in Prince William County, where he championed innovative programs that earned the school national recognition as a National Title I Distinguished School. Now in his first year at Fred M. Lynn Middle School in Northern Virginia, the high-spirited Brewer is tasked with spearheading the same transformation he led at Occoquan.
Brewer’s video “The Relentless Principal” has generated more than 24 million views. He has been featured on NBC’s Nightly News with Lester Holt and was named a Hometown Hero by Fox 5 in Washington, D.C.
Brewer has been recognized as a top principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals. He’s received the School Bell Award given by the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals and the Virginia Impact Award from the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
