University of Mary Washington President Troy D. Paino continues to earn regional and statewide recognition for his leadership in higher education.
This year, he has once again been named to Virginia Business’s notable “Virginia 500 Power List,” which honors the Commonwealth’s most influential figures across industries – from Fortune 1000 executives to government leaders and changemakers whose work drives Virginia’s economy and communities. Paino’s inclusion for the sixth consecutive year reflects his student-centered approach, expansion of academic programs in high-demand fields, and investments in the liberal arts and sciences.
As noted in the Virginia 500, “It is essential reading for any businessperson who wants to know who the state’s top movers and shakers are across industries.” Chronicling the state’s most impactful leaders in their respective industries, it also highlights “people who make major contributions to Virginia’s economy and their regions.”
Paino’s work through UMW spans the Fredericksburg region with broader efforts to shape the future of Virginia’s educational and civic landscape. And his tenure is being recognized as well, as this year, Paino has also been named an Icon by Virginia Business.
The Icon Honors Awards recognize the lifetime achievements of Virginia leaders from business, government and higher education over the age of 60 whose track records of success, visionary leadership and commitment to excellence have left a lasting impact on their organizations and their communities, inspiring generations to come.
“Virginia Business is proud to recognize this year’s Icon Honorees,” said Richard Foster, the magazine’s associate publisher. “These individuals have demonstrated visionary leadership, remarkable accomplishments and an enduring commitment to excellence. Their influence has not only strengthened their organizations but has also inspired generations.”
In addition, Paino’s influence has been recognized for a second year by Northern Virginia Magazine. The 50 Most Influential People of 2025 cites leaders in business and development, education, government, health care, philanthropy and more, who have made an impact in the last year on where Northern Virginians live and work, where they go for entertainment and how they spend their time. With a list culled by the editorial team, the criteria centers on achievements, cultural significance, peer recommendations and community involvement.
For Paino, the honor notes his nearly decade-long role at the University of Mary Washington, an increased retention rate and garnered accolades. The Princeton Review has ranked UMW in the top 20 nationally for internships and making an impact. U.S. News & World Report has listed UMW in the top 10 public liberal arts and sciences colleges in the country.
