Nurses in Northern Virginia ready to take their expertise to the next level now have access to a new master’s program tailored to their professional career paths.
The University of Mary Washington invites applications for the Master of Science in Nursing Program, with the first cohort starting classes in Fall 2026. Applications are encouraged throughout the spring semester and will be reviewed on a rolling basis through June 1, 2026.
MSN Program Virtual Open Houses are scheduled each month from February through April, offering program details and admissions tips. Learn more about the flexible study options, real-world practicum experiences, and career paths in primary care and education on Feb. 24, March 12 or April 7.
Designed for working registered nurses throughout Virginia – and particularly in the Fredericksburg region – UMW’s MSN graduate program prepares healthcare specialists for advanced roles in clinical practice, education and leadership.
Coursework will be delivered fully online to provide flexibility for busy schedules, complemented by in-person simulation and clinical practicum experiences developed in partnership with regional healthcare organizations.
MSN students can choose the nursing education track to prepare for faculty roles at colleges and universities or in clinical facilities through curriculum development, assessment and educational technology, or select the family nurse practitioner track to focus on advanced nursing practice and primary care. Each track includes 18 credit hours of core coursework, 12 to 18 additional hours in the track area, and five to nine credit hours for clinical practicum. Students can enroll part-time to balance busy schedules and earn the degree in three years.
“This new MSN program expands our ability to offer graduate students personalized and holistic educational experience that will prepare advanced practice registered nurses to take the American Association of Nurse Practitioners or American Nurses Credential Center national board certification examination,” said Director of Nursing Janet Atarthi-Dugan.
With small cohorts, dedicated faculty mentors and personalized advising, the MSN program at UMW offers a supportive and student-centered approach to graduate nursing education.
To apply, qualified applicants must have an RN license in Virginia and have earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited program. See the full list of requirements, request more information or start an application on the UMW MSN program website.
