The University of Mary Washington College of Education and Stafford County Public Schools hosted the third annual Literacy Leaders Symposium on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The symposium, “Literacy Leadership: Catalyst for Change,” allowed educators to engage in professional discussions of how literacy teaching and learning are impacting Virginia K-12 students, school divisions and education stakeholders.
The symposium included a keynote presentation from William Brozo, professor of literacy at George Mason University. Brozo is the author of numerous articles and books on literacy development for children and young adults, including “Content Literacy for Today’s Adolescents.” His research focuses on adolescent and content literacy, secondary literacy reform, struggling learners and closing the literacy achievement gap for boys. Brozo received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina and a master’s and doctorate from the University of South Carolina.
The day also included presentations from Richard Long, director of government relations at the International Reading Association, and Tracy Robertson, English coordinator in the Office of Standards, Curriculum and Instruction at the Virginia Department of Education. Additionally, K-12 teachers presented numerous small-group breakout sessions focused on literacy instruction.
