We appreciate our UMW Dining team and Facilities Operations for their extraordinary efforts this week. Our campus staff have worked tirelessly – day and night – to prepare our campuses for the return of in‑person learning. Their dedication to clearing roads, walkways, and key access points, despite nightly refreezing, has been exceptional. This week’s unprecedented winter storm brought conditions unlike those our region typically faces, requiring a different and far more intensive approach to snow and ice removal.
Exercise caution as you navigate campus, and stay on clear paths only. Areas covered in snow and ice should be considered closed. To report areas that need to be cleared, report it through the work order system. For facilities emergencies outside normal business hours call the University Police at 540-654-1025. For any campus emergencies, contact the UMW Police emergency number at 540-654-4444. Facilities staff will be on campus throughout the winter weather, working to clear the snow when it is safe to do so.
Snow emergency parking restrictions continue until further notice. Parking lots are not available for incoming traffic. Parking capacity remains a primary concern, and clearing and restoring those areas takes significant time under these conditions. We continue coordinating with local partners to address surrounding streets and sidewalks so the entire campus community can return fully to normal operations following this winter storm.
We remain focused on supporting our residential students in their college homes by ensuring cleared paths to move around campus, pick up meals, and participate in virtual classes, limited activities or access the fitness center. Thank you to everyone for quickly pivoting to online learning and alternative class options as needed. Your patience and positivity throughout this week are appreciated.

Due to the lingering accumulation of snow and ice and continued adverse road conditions in the Fredericksburg region, UMW campuses (Fredericksburg, Dahlgren and Stafford) will continue virtual operations through Friday, Jan. 30, with virtual class options.
We are appreciative of our staff and faculty in working throughout this week for academic continuity and to return our campus to normal operations following the weekend winter storm. We remain focused on our residential students and their college homes, prioritizing paths to navigate campus, pick-up food, and connect to activities and the fitness center to stay active. We are particularly grateful for the UMW Facilities Operations team in their superhuman efforts to remove the snow, sleet and ice that has accumulated on campus and refreezes each night. We continue to coordinate with area partners to remove snow and ice from surrounding streets and sidewalks so that our campus community can fully return to normal operations.
Extending virtual operations through Friday allows time to complete this work.
In-person classes and public events will not be held through Friday, Jan. 30, on the Fredericksburg, Stafford or Dahlgren Campuses. Please look for communication from your instructors for alternative class planning this week.
Faculty have the discretion to cancel class or switch to another modality or assignment, including holding class virtually. If virtual instruction involves a synchronous element, the meeting time must be during the normal class meeting time. Faculty are responsible for informing students of their intention. However, students should not be penalized if they are unable to attend or complete assignments virtually during the inclement weather period.
Employees should work from home (telework) through Friday, Jan. 30, and plan with their supervisor for options. Employees who are designated as essential should report to work as specified by their supervisor.
Snow emergency parking restrictions continue until further notice. Please do not move your vehicles as snow removal continues. Roads coming to and from campus are still being cleared, and we are working in partnership with the city on improved road conditions surrounding campus. Parking lots are not available for incoming traffic.
With cold temperatures continuing this week, areas of campus may refreeze, particularly overnight. Use the cleared paths, as available, and do not attempt to take steps or hills that are not cleared. Construction areas remain closed.
