Resources for Parents & Families

Parents and family members are among our most important partners in helping UMW students thrive. Family influence is critically important to student resilience, learning, and success. We know from Healthy Minds Study data that UMW students often turn to family members first for help in stressful or distressing situations.

Parents and family members support the mission of Health and Wellness by:

  • Talking with their students about their health and well-being, thereby normalizing conversations about stress, mental, and physical health.
  • Encouraging healthy habits, including sleep, good nutrition, physical activity, and time management.
  • Becoming familiar with UMW’s resources and reminding students to avail themselves of UMW’s resources.
  • Availing themselves of our resources as well by contacting campus professionals for guidance.
  • Trusting students to make decisions while ensuring them they have families’ full love and support.

Reporting Concerns: The most effective way to support a student is to report a concern to our “Concerned About a Student” site here. The concern will be routed to the appropriate resource for follow up. Please submit any concern, big or small, to this site, and it will be directed to the office that can best support the student. In addition, the UMW Police are available 24 hours a day all year long at 540-654-1025. Their emergency number is 540-654-4444.

Parent and Family Newsletter: If you have not already, stay current on resources and other university matters by the parent newsletter.
