Summer is the perfect time for high school students and their families to get an early start on their college search, and with daily campus visits available, the University of Mary Washington fits into any travel schedule. Midway between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia, it’s easy to add us to your travel plans. It’s a stop that combines the historic charm of downtown Fredericksburg with more than a century of higher education excellence across the arts and sciences.
With more than 234 acres, the University of Mary Washington campus includes state-of-the-art science labs where undergraduate research takes shape, a business program where entrepreneurs start-up their vision and a recently renovated home base for education programs with model classrooms and makerspaces that inspire teachers and students. The future of UMW includes the construction of a breathtaking theatre that will house the theatre program, which regularly produces grads who make it to Broadway, and art and music studios that thrive with performances and exhibits.
Campus tours and information sessions are available twice daily weekdays and on Saturday mornings through mid-August, but Enhanced Summer Visits – scheduled for Friday, July 11, and Monday, July 21 – provide an even more in-depth experience. Visitors can stroll along UMW’s tree-lined Campus Walk, get a glimpse inside its brick buildings and inviting classrooms, and brush up on what the UMW experience entails. Plus, Enhanced Summer Visits include specialized information about financial aid and chances to talk one-on-one with Mary Washington’s academic leaders and deans.
UMW is a small-sized university that offers big opportunities, connecting students with transformative experiences, including internships, research projects, community service opportunities and study abroad programs, plus more than 150 student organizations and NCAA Division III Athletics. The campus is home to a warm and welcoming community in the heart of Fredericksburg, which bustles with history, the arts and plenty of options for foodies and coffee fanatics.
Scheduling a campus tour – especially during summer – lets families experience firsthand what sets Mary Washington apart, and the process couldn’t be easier.
This summer, UMW offers three types of campus visits to accommodate any schedule:
– Weekday Visits: Tours and information sessions are available weekdays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
– Weekend Visits: Perfect for families, Saturday tours begin with an information session at 11 a.m.
– Enhanced Summer Visits: For a more in-depth experience, join us on Friday, July 11 or Monday, July 21. These visits include specialized tours and sessions with academic leaders and deans. Interested prospective students and their families can choose preferred dates on the “Visit UMW” webpage.
“Summer is a great time to stop in and take a tour of our beautiful campus – start picturing yourself strolling down Campus Walk, hanging out with friends during campus events, and connecting with classmates in our academic spaces,” said Sarah Lindberg, director of first-year admission at UMW. “It’s the perfect opportunity to envision yourself as part of our community.”
Summer visits at UMW continue through Aug. 15, before the regular fall schedule resumes. For more information email admit@umw.edu or call 540-654-2000. Learn more at umw.edu/apply.
