General Institutional Information

  • FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and Families
    • This website provides information regarding the Privacy policies at UMW, as well as instructions for students to delegate access to a third party user, such as a parent.

  • Net Price Calculator
    • The Net Price Calculator is designed to help you estimate your financial aid options for the University of Mary Washington. The calculator is designed to determine estimated financial assistance for first-year, full-time undergraduate students.
  • Refund Policy
    • Refunds for dropping a course or withdrawing from the University are based on the official date of drop or withdrawal, not on the date of last attendance.
  • Withdrawal and Cancellation Procedures
    • This website outlines the Office of the Registrar’s Withdrawal & Cancellation procedures.
  • Return of Federal Financial Aid
    • Students who withdraw from any or all classes after the start of a semester will have their aid reduced in accord with the Federal Return to Title Four Funds policy.  Additionally, if proceeds have been disbursed it is very likely that eligibility will be pro-rated and funds returned to the appropriate programs.

  • Accreditation
    • The University of Mary Washington is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate and masters degrees.   • Appeal and Complaint Policies
    • Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal – Financial Aid
      • In accordance with federal regulations, all recipients of federal financial aid must maintain a satisfactory rate of progress toward the completion of a degree (i.e. pace) and must be in good standing based on a cumulative grade point average (GPA), regardless of whether financial aid was received previously.
    • Merit and Curriculum Scholarship Appeal Process – Merit Appeal Committee
      • This appeal process is for students that have not been renewed for a merit-based scholarship or curriculum award based on unmet renewal criteria.
    • Reporting Fraud, Theft, Waste or Abuse
      • Internal Audit encourages individuals with information pertaining to potential fraud, waste, or abuse to contact the Internal Audit Department.
    • Complaints and Reporting
      • UMW is committed to fostering a community that promotes prompt reporting of all types of Prohibited Conduct and timely and fair resolution of Prohibited Conduct complaints. Prohibited Conduct violates UMW’s tradition of honor and integrity and will not be tolerated.
  • University Code of Conduct Policy
    • This website lists specific violations of community standards which are addressed through UMW’s judicial system, and the hearing board or administrator who adjudicates them.

    •   The University of Mary Washington does not tolerate the possession or use of, or being under the influence of, illegal drugs. This policy also pertains to any University-sponsored event, or while operating or traveling in any Mary Washington or state-owned vehicle.

Student Financial Assistance

  • Code of Conduct for Educational Student Loans

    • A UMW financial aid professional is expected to always maintain exemplary standards of professional responsibilities, specifically including all dealings with any entities involved in any manner in student financial aid, regardless of whether such entities are tied to a government sponsored, subsidized, or regulated activity
  • Types of Aid Available From Federal, State, Local, and Institutional Programs
    • The UMW Office of Financial Aid strives to assist students in reaching their educational goals by providing information and resources regarding financial aid options. UMW administers a variety of institutional, state, federal, and private aid in the form of grants, scholarships and student loans. UMW also works with private lenders and scholarship administrators to ensure that students receive their financial aid in a timely manner.
  • Drugs and Eligibility for Financial Assistance
    • The Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) enacted in 2008 reauthorizes the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965, as amended. These laws state that any student who has been convicted of any Federal or State law involving the possession or sale of a controlled substance shall not be eligible to receive any grant, loan, or work assistance during the period beginning on the date of such conviction and ending after the interval specified on this website.
  • Entrance Federal Loan Counseling for Student Borrowers
    • First-time student borrowers are federally required to complete Direct Loan Entrance Loan Counseling prior to receiving their first loan disbursement.
  • Exit Counseling for Student Borrowers
    • All federal student loan borrowers must complete exit counseling after they graduate, or are no longer enrolled at least half-time.
  • Private Educational Loans
    • Students who need additional help meeting college expenses may be able to obtain a private or alternative educational loan. These types of loans are offered through many organizations, banks, and credit unions
