Break Housing
Residential students are afforded the opportunity to register to remain on campus during the various breaks that occur during the academic year. Important information and deadlines for break housing including Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring breaks are outlined on this page.
Thanksgiving Break
Residence halls will close for Thanksgiving Break on Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at 10 AM – Sunday, November 30, 2025 at 2 PM. Any student requiring break housing during this period must register with Residence Life and Housing.
Registration and Deadlines
Residents that need to register to remain on-campus for Thanksgiving Break must submit a Thanksgiving Break Registration form no later than Friday, November 14.
All residential students that register to remain on-campus for Thanksgiving Break will be able to remain in their residence hall during the break period. Please note that the Thanksgiving Break Registration form is exclusively for Thanksgiving Break. A different registration form will be used for Winter Break.
On-Campus Services
Residents should be aware that on-campus dining services will not be available and student services will be unavailable during the Thanksgiving Break period.
Preparing Your Room for Thanksgiving Break
All residents who are not registered to remain on campus during the break must depart their Residence Hall by 10AM on November 26, 2025. Before leaving for break, students should ensure that their windows are closed and locked, their window shades/blinds are closed, heat in their rooms is on, their lights are off, all trash is removed, and their doors are locked. Electronic devices (excluding mini-fridges) should be unplugged and moved off the floor.
Winter Break
Residence halls will close for Winter Break on December 13, 2026 at 10 AM – January 11, 2026 at 9 AM. Any student requiring break housing during this period must register with Residence Life and Housing.
Registration and Deadlines
Residents that need to register to remain on campus for Winter Break must submit their Winter Break Registration Form no later than December 5, 2025. Students who withdraw from all of their Fall semester classes prior to the end of the semester are not eligible for Winter Break Housing.
On-Campus Services
Residents should be aware that on-campus student services, including campus dining, will be unavailable during the break period. Projects out of the Facilities Services department could also result in temporary water, steam, or electrical outages. Students registered for winter break housing will be notified of any outages affecting their assigned room or building.
Preparing Your Room for Winter Break
Residence Halls will close for Winter Break on Saturday, December 14th, at 10 AM. All students who are not approved to remain on campus for break must vacate the residence halls by this time or by 24 hours after their last final exam (whichever comes first). Quiet Hours for exams begin at 10 PM on Friday, December 5th, and are in effect 24 hours a day until 10 AM on Saturday, December 12th. Prior to leaving for break, students should ensure that their windows are closed and locked, their window shades/blinds are closed, heat in their room is on, their lights are off, and their doors are locked. Electronic devices (excluding mini-fridges) should be unplugged and moved off the floor and all trash and recycling should be removed from rooms. Please also ensure to remove any perishable food items from the room or refrigerator before leaving for break.
Residents who live in a space where there is a vacancy must ensure, prior to departure, that the space is clear and ready for a new roommate to move-in in the Spring Semester, should they be assigned one.
Residents who will not be returning to UMW for Spring 2026 (graduation, study abroad, transfer, etc.) must submit an Intent to Vacate form. The form can be found in the Housing Portal by selecting the Petition to Cancel Housing agreement from the drop-down menu.
Students who are checking out must notify their RA and schedule a time to meet with them to go through the Room Condition Report and follow check-out procedures. Residents should return their room key to the Eagle Landing Front Desk after meeting with their RA. Any resident that does not return their key will be charged a lock change charge ($125).
Spring Break
Residence halls will close for Spring Break on Feb 27, 2026 at 7 PM – March 8, 2026 at 2 PM. Any student requiring break housing during this period must register with Residence Life and Housing.
Registration and Deadlines
All residents who wish to remain on campus during Spring Break must let Residence Life and Housing know by February 13th, 2026. Submit your Spring Break registration in Roompact.
On-Campus Services
Please remember that during Spring Break, student services, including meal services, are not provided on campus.
