GREAT LIVES: Biographical Approaches to History

The UMW Department of History and American Studies is presenting the "Great Lives" public lecture series during the spring 2008 semester. Endowed by the family of the late Carmen Culpeper Chappell (UMW Class of 1959), the series is open to the public free of charge.

Beginning in 2004 , subjects have covered a wide array of historical figures both in terms of chronology and areas of accomplishment, ranging from Genghis Khan to Princess Diana and from Pocahontas to Charles DeGaulle. Lecturers have included UMW professors from various departments, as well as acclaimed scholars and writers from outside the University. Among the latter are Dan Jordan, President of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation; Juan Williams, Senior Correspondent NPR'S "Morning Edition" and author of Thurgood Marshall: America Revolutionary; and James I. "Bud" Robertson, Distinguished Professor of History at Virginia Tech and author of Stonewall Jackson: The Man, The Soldier, The Legend.

The 2008 lectures are planned in conjunction with the University's Centennial Celebration, presenting great lives from the past century, 1908-2008.
