
UMW’s Continuing and Professional Studies Department is launching the Certified Medical Office Manager (CMOM) course to empower healthcare professionals in the Fredericksburg region and surrounding areas with the skills needed to enhance medical office operations and advance their careers.
About the Certified Medical Office Manager (CMOM) Course
The Certified Medical Office Manager (CMOM) course teaches the essential knowledge and competency standards for professional medical office management and administration. The competencies are reflective of successfully managing a group of professionals in settings where the goals are technical in nature, customer service oriented, government regulation compliant, and financially accountable to a cost margin model. There are five modules offered in 24 hours of instruction:
- Managing a medical office practice
- Acquiring skills for personnel management when you are not in charge
- Understanding the financial models for success and sustainability
- Meeting compliance standards of the government programs and medical practice
- Payment models for insurance, contracts, managed care, and doctor credentialing.
At the completion of the course, there is an online exam to obtain the certification.
There are 100 questions about the professional practice competencies, with a maximum time of three hours. You must obtain an aggregate score of 70% to meet the minimum standards, pass the exam, and obtain the certification.
Requirements: This curriculum is ideal for medical office managers looking to expand their skills and current role, administrative professionals in healthcare seeking leadership roles, and Individuals interested in managing a medical office. Candidates for CMOM certification should have a minimum of one year of medical office experience.
This course is offered in partnership with the Practice Management Institute.

- Location: University Hall, Stafford Campus 125 University Blvd, Fredericksburg, VA
- Dates: 4 sessions on Fridays, April 3, 10, 17, and 24
- Time: 9 AM to 4 PM, lunch is included.
- Cost: $1350 per person. Registration closes 1 week before the event.
- Group rates: Available for groups of 5 or more.
