Admission Requirements

Application Dates
Fall Admission: April 15: Notification should occur by the first week in June.
Spring Admission: September 15: Notification should occur by the first week in November.
Summer Admission: February 15: Notification should occur by the first week in April.
TRACK II EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP APPLICATION FILING DATE: JUNE 1 : Notification should occur by the first week in July.

Admission Requirements for Track I Licensure Program (Initial Teacher Licensure with M.Ed. Option)
- The completed M.Ed. Application and a non-refundable $50 application fee;
- An undergraduate degree from an regionally accredited college or university;
- An official transcript from every college or university you've attended even if the courses were transferred to another institution.
- Competitive applicants are encouraged to have a cumulative grade-point average (G.P.A.) of 2.5 or higher on undergraduate course work, a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. on graduate course work;
- A résumé outlining experiences and education. In addition to your paid work experience, please include all volunteer experience related to education - for example, coaching, teaching religious education, working with Scouts, volunteering in a school, etc. Candidates who have completed their bachelor’s degree in the past 12 months and do not have three years of work experience must complete the M.Ed.;
- An interview may be required.
- PRAXIS I scores —reading, writing, and mathematics—tests (or qualifying SAT or ACT scores);
- Submit two essays (2-3 typed, double-spaced pages each):
- Why are you seeking teaching credentials? Why do you feel qualified to teach the subject/grade level of the endorsement you seek?
- Discuss a current issue in education, why you think it is important, and your stance on it.
Admission to candidacy for the five-year renewable license occurs upon acceptance into EDCI 550 Field Mentorship.
A limited number of seats are available for non-degree students. You may begin the program as a non-degree student if you have an application in progress. Teachers with provisional or conditional licenses who need a course, currently licensed teachers who need to take a course for license renewal, and other students are also allowed to take courses as non-degree students. For more information on the non-degree option, contact the CGPS Office of Advising and Student Services at 540-286-8030.
Admission Requirements for the Track II M.Ed. for Professional Development or Added Endorsement (Master of Education for Licensed Teachers--TRACK II)
- Submit a completed application for admission, The MEd Application and a non-refundable $50 application fee;
- Submit an official transcript from every college or university you’ve attended even if the courses were transferred to another institution;
- Have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university,
- Have an undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or higher—2.75 or higher for the Educational Leadership Program—on undergraduate course work and 3.0 or higher on graduate course work;
- Provide a résumé outlining work experience and education. In addition to your paid work experience and leadership roles you have assumed, please include all volunteer experience related to education – for example, coaching, teaching religious education, working with Scouts, volunteering in a school, etc.;
- An interview may be required as part of the admission process, but would be initiated by the Admissions Committee;
- Provide verification of the current Virginia Collegiate Professional or Graduate Professional license;
- Submit two essays (2-3 typed, double-spaced pages each):
- What do you hope to gain from the M.Ed. program? What contributions do you feel you can make to the program as a participant?
- Discuss a current issue in education, why you think it is important, and your stance on it.
Educational Leadership (M.Ed. or Post-Master's Certificate)
Admission requirements include all elements of other track two applicants listed above as well as:
- Three years of experience as a licensed teacher;
- Three recommendations on the forms provided from your immediate supervisor and others qualified to address your teaching performance and leadership potential (References may be contacted about the leadership potential of the candidate.);
- An interview, and
- A writing exercise as part of the interview that may involve responding to a case study or producing a sample administrative letter;
- Submit t wo essays below (2-3 typed, double-spaced pages each);
- Discuss a current issue in educational leadership that you might face as an educational leader.
- A statement of purpose in which you discuss your current and future leadership goals. What contributions do you feel you can make to the program as a participant?
Certificate Programs (Autism, Gifted Education Add-On, and TESL)
- The M.Ed. Application and a non-refundable $50 application fee;
- An official transcript from every college or university you've attended even if the courses were transferred to another institution;
- Competitive applicants are encouraged to have a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on undergraduate course work, a 3.0 cumulative GPA on graduate course work;
- A résumé outlining experiences and education. In addition to your paid work experience, please include all volunteer experience related to education - for example, coaching, teaching religious education, working with Scouts, volunteering in a school, etc. Candidates who have completed their bachelor’s degree in the past 12 months and do not have three years of work experience must complete the M.Ed.;

- A copy of your current Virginia Collegiate Professional or Graduate Professional License;
- Submit two essays (2-3 typed, double-spaced pages each):
